What IAN does and doesn't do. Plus how to use it responsibly.
What you should know
IAN is powerful. It's also not magic. And it can be confidently wrong. Read this before you will start.
IAN is a tool, not a human
It's really good at:
- Answering questions fast
- Summarizing huge documents
- Explaining complicated things simply
- Brainstorming and drafting
It's bad at:
- Being the final authority on anything
- Legal advice (ask a lawyer)
- Medical advice (ask a doctor)
- Financial advice (ask a financial advisor)
- Guaranteeing accuracy (it hallucinates sometimes)
- Keeping secrets (your data is stored securely but admins can see it)
Rule of thumb: If getting it wrong would cause a problem, don't rely on IAN alone. Verify with a human or official source.
What IAN actually does
✅ Summarizes long emails, reports, documents
✅ Answers questions about documents you upload
✅ Drafts emails, outlines, proposals
✅ Explains complex concepts in simple language
✅ Brainstorms ideas (sometimes good ideas, sometimes bad ones)
✅ Extracts data from PDFs and spreadsheets
✅ Translates between languages (imperfectly)
What IAN doesn't do
❌ Access your email, calendar, or files — You have to upload things manually
❌ Make decisions for you — It advises; you decide
❌ Guarantee accuracy — Always fact-check important stuff
❌ Provide legal, medical, or financial advice — Even if you ask nicely
❌ Keep your data private from admins — They can see your chats for compliance/audit purposes
❌ Bypass security policies — It respects data classification rules (ask your admin what that means)
How to use it responsibly
If you're in HR
Use IAN to:
- Draft emails or policies
- Summarize employee handbooks
- Explain benefits to new hires
Don't use IAN to:
- Make hiring or firing decisions (that's on you)
- Bypass legal review (HR Legal should sign off on policy changes)
- Ignore employment laws (IAN can't substitute for actual legal advice)
If you're in Claims or Underwriting
Use IAN to:
- Summarize claim documents
- Spot potential issues in applications
- Draft follow-up letters
Don't use IAN to:
- Approve or deny claims without human review (humans decide; IAN advises)
- Ignore your underwriting guidelines (IAN doesn't know your company's rules)
- Use it as the only source of truth (verify with actual underwriting systems)
If you're in Actuarial
Use IAN to:
- Explain modeling approaches
- Draft technical summaries
- Help brainstorm scenarios
Don't use IAN to:
- Run actual calculations (use your modeling software)
- Make reserve estimates (use your validation systems)
- Treat it as a substitute for actuarial judgment (it's not)
If you're in Sales or Marketing
Use IAN to:
- Draft proposals and emails
- Research prospects
- Brainstorm messaging
Don't use IAN to:
- Make up facts about competitors (verify before sharing)
- Create misleading marketing claims (tell the truth)
- Pretend it wrote something a human wrote (disclose AI involvement if your company requires it)
Privacy and data
Your chats are:
- Encrypted (so snoopers can't read them in transit)
- Stored on Xceedance servers (not some random cloud)
- Not sent to LLM vendors in identifiable form (your data isn't used to train their models)
- Visible to your organization's admins (for legal/compliance reasons)
- Not your private property (it's company data)
Before you upload:
- Check that you have permission to share the document
- If it contains classified or sensitive data, ask your admin first
- Redact personally identifiable information (names, SSNs, etc.) if possible

✅ Ask for help — Don't know something? Ask a human or support
❌ Don't upload classified data without permission — Ask your admin first
❌ Don't use it to harass or discriminate — Don't be that person
❌ Don't circumvent security policies — We take this seriously
❌ Don't claim AI-generated work as entirely your own — Not honest
